Our hedgewitch has come up with a sustainable alternative to pig oil, made specifically to meet the needs of horses. Contains peppermint & sweet orange essential oils which help to discourage biting insects, such as feather mites and midges. For horses with sweet itch, always use it to supplement an insect repellent with proven efficacy against midges.

Sweet orange and peppermint are a proven Hedgewitch combination for combating itching and inflammation. A daily application to the coat of horses known to suffer from sweet itch or seasonal itching can help manage the symptoms. Read our blog post for more information.

Hedgewitch horse oil is 100% plant-based and can be used in exactly the same way as pig oil but without the carbon footprint (pig oil is white oil from petrochemicals). Horse oil can be used on feather and legs to protect them from the effects of mud and wet, help prevent ‘bog burn’ and mud fever, and help discourage mites.

Horse oil can also be applied sparingly to the coat, mane, and tail to leave the hair silky, shiny, and tangle-free - we advise spritzing using our trigger spray or adding it sparingly to a bucket of warm water as a 'hot oil' application.

Our horse oil is made from the oil found in coconuts, which are only sourced from sustainable plantations. The coconut oil is heated to separate out the long-chain fatty acids and produce a very light, food-grade oil - using no chemicals in the extraction process. The resulting non-greasy oil is easily absorbed by the skin and moisturises without blocking pores.

Used 2-3 times a week during winter, Hedgewitch horse oil has natural antioxidant and antibacterial properties to help support the health and resilience of your horse’s skin through the wet months.

Horse oil

Bought this with some more fly repellent as I thought it would be useful in the winter to protect my horses legs. However, I have used it to stop them rubbing their tails. Not had a problem since. The lovely smell is a bonus. I have been very impressed by the products I have bought.

Just fabulous

Horse oil is amazing for brushing and detangling manes, tails and feather. I also use it before clipping which saves bathing a horse in cold weather. The scent of this is amazing too.

Has really helped our cobs sweet itch.

Our pony has previously rubbed her ears raw, had scabs all up her mane, a bog brush tail from ribbing, chewed her hips and backs of her knees. Coming into the itchy season this year, I have used nothing but Hedgewitch horse oil and she has a full main and tail and no rubs on her body or legs. She is turned out with no fly rug now (as that seemed to make her worse) just sprayed all over with the orange horse oil.
