Hedgewitch Itchy Gel contains a blend of essential oils in an aloe vera gel base to help deter feather mites or midges and relieve any itching, while promoting the restoration of the skin. It also soothes sore, irritated skin and can be used to apply to insect bites for fast relief.

Formulated as an easy-to-apply gel, it can also be applied as a preventative application for mites and midges. For horses with a lot of feather, more water can be added to the gel (spooned into another container) to let it down in consistency and make it go further.

Seasonal itching

Itchy gel has been specially formulated to help with itching and to fend off midges. allowing the skin to repair. It's non-greasy and plant-based formulation doesn't leave residues that attract dirt which can exacerbate itching, as often happens with traditional benyzl benzoate treatments for sweet itch.

It is also suitable for horses with seasonal itching and those that scratch the tops of their tails or manes. It's also worth trying  in combination with Horse oil with sweet orange and peppermint for added relief.

About feather mites

Also known as ‘heel mange’, the irritation is caused by Chorioptes mites. It can be a very distressing condition, making horses extremely itchy. Affected horses constantly stamp and bite the legs or rub the backs of the fetlocks and pasterns against anything they have access to, often the stable wall or fence posts. It is most common in heavily feathered breeds, particularly coloured cobs, draft horses and Friesians.

Chorioptic mites are far smaller than lice and not visible with the naked eye. They live on the horse’s hair and skin and can sometimes burrow into the skin causing irritation. Mites often occur in association with mallanders, which provides a food source for them.

Our feather mite gel contains sweet orange and peppermint essential oils with BP grade neem oil in an aloe vera gel base. Neem provides a hostile environment for chorioptes mite and also acts as a deterrent to midges causing sweet itch. Both orange oil and peppermint help relieve itching and contribute to the deterrent effect on insects.

Summary information

Itchy gel can be applied to any itchy area, as long as the skin isn't broken, and to areas that need additional protection - such as the base of the mane and the head of the tail. Reapply as required, usually this will be twice per day, but be guided by the response from your horse.

Aloe vera gel, neem (Azadirachta indica) oil, sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil, peppermint (Mentha piperita) essential oil.

Aloe vera gel and essential oils are generally non-irritating and non-sensitising to the skin. However, essential oils do contain naturally occurring allergens in small quantities and some horses are sensitive to neem, so we strongly recommend a small patch test before proceeding with general use, particularly for horses with a known history of allergies or sensitive skin.

My horse loves it (and it works!)

Since spring my horse has been itching his face around his eyes and cheek bones to the stage where he has no fur left. He usually doesn't like having his face touched, especially when it comes to applying medicines. Before Itchy Gel he would need to be wrestled whilst in giraffe-mode to get creams on his face. But with Itchy Gel he will stand at liberty and put his head down for the gel application. He loves it and I believe it is because it gives him relief from the itching. I keep it in the fridge so it is extra cool when it is applied to his face on a hot day.

I have now purchased 3tubs of this and I still have the problem of itchy legs and feet with my cobs

I have now purchased 3tubs of this and I still have the problem of itchy legs and feet with my cobs, especially one who is a very itchy horse. He has a lot of feather. I tried watering it down a bit to spread it out and continued using for at least 3 weeks every day, but he is still itchy and sometimes as soon as I put it on he will go and rub his legs on the fence post. My other horse has not been stamping his feet as much though I think. I cannot trim his feathers either as he has never had this done and is a rescue pony plus I have no blades to do it and I have had no luck in the past with my other horse trying to trim his feathers. I am still persevering and hope in time it will reduce as it does have neem oil in which is a good deterrent.

Hi Julie,

Thanks for the review and pleased that one of your horses seems to be improving.

If you have established feathermites, we advise using this product in conjunction with horse oil with sweet orange & peppermint. Both products are intended to relieve and discourage mites naturally but if symptoms don't improve, you may need to consult your veterinary professional about prescribing cydectin.

Been using itchy gel for a week

Been using itchy gel for a week. Noticed a big difference.
I did use Switch was was good but my mare hated me putting it on once a week.
She actually loves me rubbing the gel on her neck and especially in her tail . Hasn't rubbed her tail for a week now .
So pretty impressed over all with this product.
I did use the fly spray last year and it was the best I'd ever used.
So I would try these products there very good and not to expensive either .
